Duties include:
- Preparing vessel to get underway before passengers arrive, and to clean and maintain vessel between sailings
- Handling docklines and assisting captain with getting underway and making fast to the dock on return
- Greeting passengers, escorting them, and helping keep them comfortable while underway
- Using various gear to hoist, control, and douse sails
- Learn and use various other shipboard equipment, from radios to radar, charts to marlinspikes

This will include maintenance of all shipboard systems: communications equipment, diesel engines, pumps, electronics, fiberglass and carpentry. Training will be provided, so don't feel you need to be an expert in order to apply.

The Coast Guard requires a background check and clean drug test. I require a passion for decency, civil and social rights, candor, and a general fire in the belly. Those without a sense of adventure need not apply. This is an entry level job with a small, new company that has been trying its best to survive a tough year, but hard workers will be rewarded and crew members will be encouraged and assisted with procuring captain’s licenses and other professional development is also available.

Prior experience on a sailboat would be nice, but we are looking for a special kind of person, and when we find him or her or them, we are willing and able to train. Curiosity is a must. A strong work ethic is a must. Timeliness is a must. Commitment to our mission, which is primarily a social justice mission, is also a must. The ability to speak languages other than English is a plus. Racism, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, xenophobia and nativism are unacceptable and not tolerated. All Aboard NOLA exists specifically to provide access to sailing for people that weren’t historically invited to join the “yacht club” scene.

About the captain: Visit AllAboardNOLA.com to get a sense of who I am and what I’m trying to do. I’m a former Navy sailor, I’ve worked for commercial boats on the river, worked as a deckhand on tall ships in other states. I’m a licensed captain and merchant mariner. I have two old, fussy boats that I love and hate very much. I work a lot, and hard. I read a lot and enjoy the company of other people who also read a lot. I am a direct communicator and I do not compliment work that I don’t like. I work hard to be fair and loyal but am not terribly “squishy” so if direct communication with little fluff is not to your liking, I might not be a good fit for you.
If you are interested, e-mail me about yourself, your experience with boats or boating, and why you think you would be a good fit at allaboardnola@gmail.com or call me at (504) 444-5776.
I do text but don’t see why you would introduce yourself that way, so please call or e-mail.
